Posto lungo il crinale occidentale dell'alta Val d'Agri nella parte sud-occidentale della regione, è noto per la sua lunga tradizione legata alla musica popolare e, in particolare, alla costruzione di arpe. Viggiano fu nei secoli luogo di provenienza di molti suonatori itineranti che esportarono la propria musica e le proprie tradizioni in tutto il mondo, aiutando economicamente il proprio paese d'origine, e molti di loro ebbero l'opportunità di militare in orchestre sinfoniche di livello internazionale.
