Il più antico documento che menziona la zona dove sorse Fusignano è una donazione del re longobardo Liutprando al vescovo di Faenza concernente circa 200 ettari di bosco: si tratta della magnum forestum che occupava tutta la zona a nord di Bagnacavallo fino alla valle Padusa . La zona dove sorse Fusignano era un'area di confine: qui terminavano i cardini della vecchia centuriazione romana ed iniziavano le aree paludose.
