È tra le città decorate al valor militare per la guerra di liberazione, insignita della medaglia d'oro al merito civile e della medaglia di bronzo al valor militare per i sacrifici delle sue popolazioni e per l'attività nella lotta partigiana durante la seconda guerra mondiale, ed è nota soprattutto per la sua imponente Reggia Borbonica, che, insieme al Belvedere Reale di San Leucio e all'Acquedotto Carolino, è inserita dal 1997 nel patrimonio dell'umanità dell'UNESCO.
