Le origini di Serra San Quirico sono incerte. Alcuni ritrovamenti archeologici farebbero risalire i primi insediamenti in epoca preromana. Successivamente i Romani, al fine di controllare il passaggio strategico dalla Gola della Rossa, fondarono un presidio militare attorno al quale, verosimilmente, si sviluppò il villaggio originario.
