La località è celebre per essere stata la sede di due importanti trattati di pace dopo la prima guerra mondiale, uno tra il Regno d'Italia e il Regno di Jugoslavia nel 1920, e l'altro tra la Repubblica di Weimar e l'Unione Sovietica nel 1922.
Il territorio di Rapallo si trova nella parte occidentale del golfo del Tigullio, incastonato nel golfo che prende il suo nome , tra la piana dei due principali torrenti Boate - chiamato storicamente anche Bogo - e San Francesco, quest'ultimo sito nella parte orientale della città. Il territorio comunale è attraversato inoltre da numerosi corsi d'acqua e rii minori dove, nel corso dei secoli, si sono sviluppati nuclei abitativi corrispondenti alle odierne frazioni e località rapallesi.
