Il battistero di San Giovanni Battista sorge di fronte alla cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, in piazza San Giovanni. Dedicato al patrono della città di Firenze, ha la dignità di basilica minore.
Inizialmente era collocato all'esterno della cerchia delle mura, ma fu compreso, insieme al duomo, nelle mura realizzate da Matilde di Canossa . Attualmente si trova fra piazza del Duomo e piazza San Giovanni, fra il duomo e il palazzo Arcivescovile, nel centro religioso della città. La facciata principale dell'edificio ottagonale è rivolta ad est, verso il duomo, mentre l'abside si trova verso ovest.
