La ferrovia Roma-Ancona collega la capitale con la città di Ancona e conseguentemente con la costa adriatica. Lungo il suo percorso, questa attraversa il territorio laziale, poi l'Umbria, dove tocca le città di Terni, Spoleto e Foligno, quindi attraversa l'Appennino umbro-marchigiano e infine attraversa le Marche centrali, toccando Fabriano e Jesi, arrivando sulla costa adriatica a Falconara Marittima, nei pressi di Ancona. Nei progetti originali, predisposti ancora dallo Stato Pontificio, era stata denominata Strada Ferrata "Pio Centrale", ma tale nome fu poi abbandonato dallo Stato Italiano.
