Vittorio Emanuele II (Vittorio Emanuele Maria Alberto Eugenio Ferdinando Tommaso; 14 marzo 1820 - 9 gennaio 1878) fu Re di Sardegna dal 1849 e il 17 marzo 1861 fu incoronato Re d'Italia, primo re dell'Italia unita , titolo che mantenne fino alla sua morte nel 1878. Gli italiani lo soprannominarono Padre della Patria (italiano: 'Padre della Patria').
Puntava a un'Italia unita, ma l'Austria - che aveva un ruolo di primo piano nel Nord Italia - si oppose. Eppure ci riuscì con l'aiuto dei francesi.
