La bonifica iniziò già nell'undicesimo secolo nei Paesi Bassi. Questa iniziativa venne dalle abbazie fiamminghe che iniziarono a costruire dighe in Zelanda e a prosciugare il terreno. Lentamente le isole divennero un po' più grandi grazie alla bonifica. L'Oudland di Zelanda è un esempio di un'area bonificata. Dopo una tempesta nel 1134, l'oudland fu completamente murato, con le dighe e le barriere più antiche incorporate nella diga circolare. Questo rese difficile il drenaggio delle pozzette racchiuse dalle scarpate. Questo problema fu in parte risolto tramite canali, chiuse e sistemazioni idrauliche. Nel paesaggio attuale è ancora possibile trovare molte tracce del passato. Il "rilievo ondulato" ricorda l'estrazione di torba in queste aree. L'area chiusa delle scarpate e delle terre di transizione è ancora utilizzata come zona agricola. Nell'Oudland si alternano scarpate più alte e aree di pozze più basse.
