Si trova a nord-est di Dokkum, a est di Niawier, a sud-est di Oosternijkerk e a sud-ovest di Morra. Il nucleo del villaggio si trova nell'angolo sud-ovest dove la N358 e la N361 si incrociano tramite una rotonda, poco a nord di Zuider Ee. Il villaggio ha un proprio affluente dalla Zuider Ee. Metslawier collabora su molti fronti con Niawier e Oosternijkerk e insieme vengono comunemente chiamati un villaggio gemellato. Nel 2021, il villaggio contava 900 abitanti. Fa parte del villaggio anche la maggior parte della frazione di Reidswal.
