Il nome Wetering è originariamente emerso da un antico canale di drenaggio nel precedente Scheerwolde, chiamato “Scherwoldiger Weteringe” attorno al 1564. A metà del XVI secolo, fu scavato il canale Arembergergracht, per una rotta di navigazione interna sicura come alternativa alla navigazione attraverso il Zuiderzee. Dal Giethoornsche Meer, il percorso navigabile è stato prolungato a nord attraverso il Riete fino alla Wetering. Nel 1573 la Wetering fu ampliata e approfondita. L'intenzione era di continuare a scavare lungo l'Oudewegsloot, verso Ossenzijl e verso la Linde. Nel 1650 tutto ciò è stato realizzato. Dal 1626 al 1632, durante la costruzione dello Steenwijkerdiep, la Wetering è stata ampliata fino a Muggenbeet.
