La Fortezza di Hellevoetsluis è stata soprattutto un campo militare e un porto navale nel corso dei secoli. Gli edifici che ancora lo ricordano sono la caserma Fort Haerlem, una lunga batteria costiera del 1880, i bunker ristrutturati, una torre di polvere e le baracche nella fortezza. Da aprile a ottobre ci sono visite guidate alla batteria costiera di Hellevoetsluis. Inoltre, Hellevoetsluis ha spiagge, musei, il più grande porto turistico dei Paesi Bassi ed eventi come le Giornate della Fortezza.
La fortezza di Hellevoetsluis è stata costruita all'inizio del XVII secolo per rafforzare il porto commerciale e militare. La fortezza è stata importante fino al XIX secolo come porto (navale). Con lo scavo del Canale di Voorne intorno al 1830, c'era un vivace commercio e navigazione verso Rotterdam.
