Qui si trova il Vecht in aperta connessione con il canale di Amsterdam-Rijn. L'acqua viene ora trasportata verso la pompa di drenaggio a IJmuiden che pompa l'acqua nel Mare del Nord. Questa connessione si trova a circa 7 chilometri a sud di Muiden, dove il Vecht confluisce nell'IJmeer, e a circa 21 chilometri a nord di Utrecht, dove il Vecht ha origine. Si presenta quindi un fenomeno strano: il Vecht scorre in due direzioni, da Muiden verso sud e da Utrecht verso nord, per sfociare qui nel canale di drenaggio sul canale di Amsterdam-Rijn.
Il canale è stato aperto nel 1892 come Merwedekanaal. Dopo un ampliamento e un allargamento nel XX secolo, ha ricevuto il suo nome attuale. Il canale ha assunto la funzione di trasporto del Vecht, dove le curve e i ponti levatoi rappresentavano ostacoli per la navigazione. Le cinque chiuse tra il Vecht e il canale sono state aperte dal 1983, rendendo da quel momento il livello dell'acqua in entrambi i corpi idrici uguale.
