La catena montuosa di Gardunha, così chiamata dai Mori, si trova nel centro del Portogallo, nella Regione Centro, oltre la catena della Serra da Estrela, dando origine a un'estesa pianura chiamata Provincia della Beira Baixa. Era coperta di vigneti ai tempi del re Denis, che regnò nel XIII e XIV secolo. Ma il sovrano decise di estirparli e sostituirli con alberi di castagno in tutta la valle di Alcambar. La valle divenne conosciuta come i boschi del re. Sfortunatamente, a causa della negligenza dell'uomo, incendi violenti distrussero un numero significativo di alberi, sebbene alcune aree siano state rimboschite.
