La denominazione della strada rappresenta un'eccezione nel sistema delle strade europee. Trattandosi di una dorsale nord-sud, essa avrebbe dovuto acquisire la denominazione E55 a partire dalla riforma del 1992. L'eccezione è stata permessa dal momento che le spese necessarie al cambio di segnaletica sarebbero state particolarmente onerose . La denominazione E55 caratterizza invece la strada che da Helsingborg prosegue verso la città greca di Calamata attraverso Danimarca, Germania, Repubblica Ceca, Austria ed Italia.
La sua lunghezza complessiva è pari a 1.590 chilometri : di questi, appena 800 metri sono in territorio finlandese, mentre il resto è interamente situato sul suolo svedese.
