L'isola dei Serpenti è la principale isola di un arcipelago di cinque isole del Mar Nero. Si trova a 45 km dalle coste della Romania e dell'Ucraina. Fa parte della provincia di Kiliya nell'oblast' di Odessa, Ucraina. La piattaforma continentale dell'isola è particolarmente ricca di petrolio e gas naturale, giacimenti scoperti negli anni ottanta. La popolazione residente nell'isola è costituita dagli addetti al faro.
L'Isola dei Serpenti era entrata a far parte del Regno di Romania nel 1878. Nel 1948 l'Unione Sovietica si impadronì dell'isola, la cui cessione non era stata prevista dal Trattato di Pace del 1947, grazie alla complicità del regime comunista appena giunto al potere in Romania e vi impiantò una base militare. Nel 1991, dopo la dissoluzione dell'URSS, l'Ucraina ereditò l'isola.
