Si trova nel nord della California, nell'estremità meridionale della Catena delle Cascate nella Contea di Siskiyou ed è la quinta vetta più elevata della Stato. La montagna ha un'età stimata di circa 593.000 anni.
Dal punto di vista geologico, fa parte dell'Arco vulcanico delle Cascate, un segmento della Cintura di fuoco del Pacifico che include oltre 160 vulcani attivi. L'ultima eruzione accertata risale al 1250, mentre segnalazioni del 1786 sono considerate inaffidabili.
