FK Austria Wien is een van de succesvolste voetbalclubs uit Oostenrijk. De grootste rivaal is stadsgenoot Rapid Wien. De kleuren van de club zijn paars en wit. Als officiële datum van oprichting van de club wordt 1911 aangehouden. Voor deze tijd was de club een voetbalsectie van de "Vienna Cricket Club", die opgericht was in 1894. Het beloftenteam van Austria Wien speelt onder de naam Young Violets in de 2. Liga op het tweede niveau.
De club werd in 1911 opgericht toen bijna het hele team van Vienna Cricket and Football-Club zich afscheurde van de in 1894 opgerichte club. De nieuwe club heette Wiener Cricketer maar er volgde protest omdat de bijnaam van de oude club Vienna Cricketer was en dat zou voor te veel verwarring zorgen. Er werd een nieuwe naam gekozen, Wiener Amateure SV.
