Op 28 juni 1914 vond de moord plaats op de Oostenrijkse kroonprins en zijn vrouw tijdens een bezoek aan Sarajevo. Na een eerste mislukte poging diezelfde dag met een handgranaat, lukte het de student Princip wel met zijn Belgisch gemaakt FN Model 1910-pistool. Hij schoot de kroonprins Ferdinand en zijn vrouw Sophie Chotek neer. Dit werd de de aanleiding tot de Eerste Wereldoorlog.
