De Grote Markt is een monumentaal plein in het centrum van Brussel. Sinds de 14e eeuw is het een geplaveid, rechthoekig plein van 111 × 56 meter.De marktplaats ontstond op de rechteroever van de Zenne, ten oosten van het Zenne-eiland en van de Werf . Dit gebied was aanvankelijk drassig en werd bij de aanleg in de twaalfde eeuw drooggelegd. Het oorspronkelijk plaveisel bevond zich 1,20 m lager dan het huidige. Van oudsher komen er zeven straatjes uit op het plein: de Boterstraat, de Guldenhoofdstraat, de Sterstraat , de Hoedenmakersstraat, de Heuvelstraat, de Haringstraat en de Vlees-en-Broodstraat.
