Het gebouw dat tijdens de 15de eeuw aan het Belfort werd gebouwd, is de Lakenhalle. Het was een handelspand waar het goedgekeurde laken te koop werd aangeboden. Vanaf de 18de eeuw deed het gebouw evenwel dienst als stadsgevangenis. Om die reden werd het kleine gebouwtje aan de zijgevel van de Lakenhalle bijgebouwd. Het werd door David 't Kindt geconcipieerd en fungeerde als ingang voor de gevangenis en als cipierswoning.
