Gevaerts Noord is een natuurgebied langs de oever van het kanaal, in de vallei van de Zuidleie. Het wordt beheerd door de vzw Natuurpunt. Tot het begin van de 20ste eeuw werden de rivierschepen door man- of paardenkracht voortgetrokken. De voorheen in het kanaaltalud aangelegde trekweg is op sommige plaatsen volledig weg geërodeerd en daardoor ontstonden de steile oevers, nu een favoriete broedplaats voor ijsvogel en oeverzwaluw.
