In 2021 werd het Zoniënwoud deel uit van het UNESCO Werelderfgoed. In Europa zijn beukenbossen een deel van ons natuurlijk, geografisch en historisch erfgoed. Nu is het beukenbos als oerbos schaars aan het worden. Maar ooit was Europa rijkelijk bedekt met dit soort habitat. Om dat wegkwijnend stuk Europees erfgoed te bewaren, ging men op zoek naar unieke en originele stukken van dat beukenbos-oerbos. Men selecteerde een reeks van 78 beukenbossen in Europa. Eén daarvan in het Zoniënwoud. En nog meer specifiek, de kernzone dat we kennen als Bosreservaat Joseph Zwaenepoel in Groenendaal.
