Hier lag in de middeleeuwen de met water gevulde gracht van Brussel aan de voet van de 1ste omwalling. Deze muur en gracht geraken in onbruik wanneer de stad uitbreiding neemt en er de 2de omwalling bijkomt. Het Sint Katelijneplein is aangelegd op een gedempt dok en werd bekroond met een kerk in de toenmalige nieuwe stijl ‘Eclectisme’ dat reeds bestaande stijlen door elkaar mengt. Kritikasters hebben ongelijk wanneer ze dit een jeugdzonde van Jozef Poelaert noemen. Op zonnige dagen en bij hemelsblauwe lucht waan je je in Zuid-Europa wanneer je opkijkt naar de elegante torens en hun koepels.
