Vanaf de middeleeuwen vestigen vooraanstaande patriciërsfamilies zich in de Veldstraat. Op de drukke handelsweg tonen ze hun macht en prestige met omvangrijke stenen huizen, ook stenen genoemd. Later domineren afwisselend fraaie herenhuizen en luxueuze handelspanden het straatbeeld. Door de industrialisering wijzigt na verloop van tijd ook de vrijetijdsbeleving. Al snel staat de Veldstraat dan ook synoniem voor een bruisend ontspanningsleven. Met de komst van de grootwarenhuizen wijzigt het uitzicht van de Veldstraat opnieuw.
