Kinrooi is een plaats en gemeente in Belgisch-Limburg. Het is de meest noordoostelijke gemeente van België. De gemeente telt meer dan 12.000 inwoners.De oudste vermelding is Kynre . Mogelijk was dit afgeleid van kin-rode oftewel "gerooid naaldbos". Op de munten die de vrijheren van de rijksheerlijkheid Kessenich sloegen, stond Kinre; "Kessenich" vermeden zij omdat het vaak ging om vervalste munten. Door epenthesis werd Kinre na verloop van tijd uitgesproken als Kindre, wat leidde tot de varianten Kinderen en Kinder . Brabantse cartografen zoals Jacob van Deventer noemden het echter steevast Kinroo, en daarom beschouwde men Kinroy, vanaf 1937 gespeld als "Kinrooi", als de niet-dialectische variant van Kinder.
