De streek rondom Meldert heeft een typische leembodem die zeer geschikt is voor landbouw, alhoewel in lager gelegen delen de bodem soms iets te vochtig is. De naam Meldert is dan ook verbonden aan zijn bodem en vegetatie. Wellicht werd de naam afgeleid van een plant, de tuinmelde of milde, die geteeld werd als groente in de trant van spinazie. Meldert zou dan betekenen: grond met meldekruid.
