Het Vrijbos, dat je misschien kent van de roversbende van Bakelandt, werd in Wereldoorlog I voor de Duitsers het strategisch punt bij uitstek. Het bos was doorweven met een net van spoorwegen die aangesloten waren op de spoorlijn Staden-Westrozebeke. Hierdoor konden ze gemakkelijk hun zwaar materiaal en geschut vervoeren. Het bos werd stilaan omgebouwd tot een oorlogsarsenaal van het Duitse leger. In september 1918 zette men het offensief in tegen het Duitse leger. Van het woud van Houthulst bleven enkel nog kapotgeschoten stammen over. Momenteel is het bos een prachtig wandelgebied met ruim 5 km aan wandelpaden.
