Berlaar is een plaats en gemeente in de provincie Antwerpen. De gemeente telt ongeveer 11.000 inwoners, die Berlaarnaars genoemd worden. In het plaatselijk dialect wordt de plaats als Balder uitgesproken. De gemeente behoort tot het gerechtelijk kanton en het kieskanton Lier.In de oudste gekende vermelding wordt het dorp Berlaer genoemd, een schrijfwijze die doorheen de geschiedenis afwisselde met Berlar, Ballaer, Ballaert en Balaer. Het was in het bezit van de heren van Mechelen en Grimbergen, de familie Berthout.
