Kortrijk is een centrumstad in het zuiden van de Belgische provincie West-Vlaanderen en is de hoofdplaats van het gelijknamige bestuurlijke en gerechtelijke arrondissement. De rivier de Leie stroomt dwars door de historische stad. Kortrijk telt bijna 78.000 inwoners , waarmee het na Brugge de grootste stad van de provincie West-Vlaanderen is. Een inwoner van Kortrijk wordt een Kortrijkzaan/Kortrijkzane of soms Kortrijkenaar genoemd. Kortrijk ligt 25 km ten noordoosten van de Franse stad Rijsel, waarmee het een transnationaal Eurodistrict vormt: de Franse-Belgische Eurometropool Rijsel-Kortrijk-Doornik met ongeveer 2.100.000 inwoners.
