Herstal is een stad in de provincie Luik. De gemeente telt ruim 39.000 inwoners en fungeert in de praktijk als voorstad van Luik.
De plaats wordt in de achtste eeuw vermeld, als Cheristalius of Haristalio. Deze naam is van Frankische oorsprong, meer specifiek vroeg Middelfrankisch. De naam bestaat uit de woorden hari en stal , oftewel 'rustplaats van het leger'.
