Leisele ligt tegen de Franse grens en is ver verwijderd van het front. Het is dan ook een rustplaats voor frontsoldaten. Van rust komt niet steeds veel in huis. Zo vallen hier per vergissing 7 projectielen van zwaar Duits geschut bij Klerken op het dorp. Eigenlijk zijn ze voor het Franse Hondschote bestemd. Ze werden wellicht met het 380 mm-kanon Lange Max afgevuurd dat ook regelmatig Duinkerke in het vizier neemt.
Op het dorpsplein staat het café ‘De Vette Os’. Tijdens de oorlog zou hier een Belgische militaire slachterij zijn geweest. In het café hangen nog altijd oude foto’s uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De houten katrol om de kadavers van dieren omhoog te trekken is te zien in een schuur op de binnenkoer. Om de gebrekkige bevoorrading op te vangen wordt Leisele het eindstation van spoorlijn 76 vanuit Adinkerke. Vlees, wijn en allerhande benodigdheden voor het front worden van hieruit verder verdeeld.
