Verviers is een stad in de provincie Luik in België. De stad telde op 1 januari 2019 55.207 inwoners. In het Waals, dat ook lokaal gesproken wordt, is de naam van de plaats Vervî.Verviers komt, evenals andere plaatsnamen eindigend op -viers, mogelijk van een Keltische uitgang -uer, die op water duidt, evenals het woord rivier. Naast deze naamsverklaring zijn er ook diverse geromantiseerde "verklaringen".
