Mater is in een zeer heuvelachtig, glooiend terrein gelegen. Om deze reden, en omdat veel wegen nog met kasseien zijn aangelegd, is de Abeelstraat in Mater een vast onderdeel van de Ronde van Vlaanderen. De helling is bekend uit onder andere De Reuzen van Vlaanderen, een parcours voor wielertoeristen en ze geldt als een van de zwaardere hellingen in de Vlaamse Ardennen.
