De heide van het Drongengoed behoort tot een zeldzaam type: de 'intermediaire Atlantische heide'. Een mond vol maar dit type herbergt nog net iets meer verschillenden soorten dan de veelbezongen 'purperen heide' van de Kempen. Met behulp van Europese subsidies werden in 2009 aan de Drongengoedweg stroken 'geplagd', wat het wegschrapen van de bovenste bodemlaag is. Zo kregen de zaden van de oude vegetaties weer de kans om zich te ontwikkelen. Een logische ingreep voor een gebied dat al 1000 jaar schippert tussen bos en heide.
