Het Convent van Chièvres werd per testament gesticht door Maria van Hamal, weduwe van Guillaume de Croy, heer van Chièvres. Het werd uiteindelijk pas opgericht in 1561 door Maria’s testamentuitvoerder. Het Convent van Chièvres is niet de enige religieuze stichting van Maria van Hamal. Van het Leuvense stadsbestuur mocht ze een klooster voor zesendertig religieuzen oprichten. Aanvankelijk zou dat een kartuizerinnenklooster worden, maar vanaf 1524 ijverde Maria voor de oprichting van een annunciatenklooster. Ze volgde daarmee het voorbeeld van landvoogdes Margareta van Oostenrijk. Voor haar bouwplannen kocht Maria de Leuvense residentie van de prins van Chimay, bloedverwant van haar overleden tweede echtgenoot, in de buurt van de huidige Kruidtuin. Ze leverde ook een grote financiële bijdrage aan de uitbreiding en verfraaiing van de Leuvense Kartuis. Waarom ze dat deed? Volgens haar gelovige opvattingen was het de beste investering voor haar toekomst in het hiernamaals.
