De familie Hannecart beplantte deze Doolaeghe (een 'dood' stuk grond waar niets op wilde groeien) rond 1930 beplant voor de jacht, vandaar de naam Hannecartbos. Akkertjes en historische graslanden werden beplant met elzen omdat ze dachten dat die erg geschikt waren voor dergelijke natte gronden. Het bos is doorsneden door brede dreven van monumentale populieren.
