In de 15de eeuw was Brugge een bloeiende handelsstad. Dankzij rijke handelaren en de steun van het Bourgondische vorstenhuis werd Brugge een inspirerende ontmoetingsplaats voor tal van kunstenaars, in het bijzonder de Vlaamse Primitieven, zoals Jan Van Eyck en Hans Memling. Hun werk beïnvloedde schilderstijlen in heel Europa. Hun meesterwerken en andere topcollecties zijn te bewonderen in het Groeningemuseum, het Sint-Janshospitaal, de Sint-Salvatorskathedraal, de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk en de vele andere musea in Brugge.
