Description

Het gebied bevindt zich in het midden van de provincie Limburg en wordt begrensd door de steden Houthalen-Helchteren, Genk en Zonhoven. De ankerplaats omvat enerzijds de natuurreservaten Ten Haagdoornheide en De Teut, die samen één van de meest waardevolle heidelandschappen in Limburg vormen en anderzijds het voormalig militair domein Molenheide. De uitgestrekte heide wordt doorkruist door een aantal moerassige en beboste beekvalleien die ontspringen op het Kempisch plateau. De Laambeek, Roosterbeek en Slangebeek voeden het vijvergebied van Midden-Limburg en bestaan zelf uit een aaneenschakeling van historische vijvers en vennen. Op de rand van de vallei van de Roosterbeek ligt het kasteeldomein Engelhof (Hengelhoef) dat oorspronkelijk werd ingericht als landbouwkolonie van de abdij van Floreffe in de 12de eeuw.
