Archeologische vondsten tonen aan dat Destebergen al bewoond was sinds 10,000 vr Chr.
Alhoewel het hoogteverschil hier minimaal is, werwijst de naam 'bergen' naar de zanderige hoger gelegen delen ten NE van de Schelde. Deze hooogteverschillen waren voldoende om uit te keizen als nederzettingsplaats. In periodes wanneer de de Schelde dikwijls buiten zijn oevers trad, was het wel handig om wegen en dorpen op hoger gelegen zandruggen aan te leggen.
Het tweede deel van de naam, "Destel", is afkomstig van het Keltische "Thesle", wat een verwijzing is (maar dan in het Keltisch) van de zandheuvel in het centrum van de gemeente. Deze is nu grotendeels genivelleerd zodat je er nauwelijks iets van voelt als je er met de fiets over rijdt.
