De Reservaatzone Donkmeer maakt deel uit van een groter gebied dat sedert lang bekendheid geniet bij de toerist, smulpaap, wandelaar, kunstenaar, bioloog en historicus. Grote ondiepe waterpartijen, ontstaan door turfontginning, bepalen het uitzicht van het Donkmeer. Vzw Durme staat in voor het beheer van dit natuurgebied, en organiseert hier regelmatig activiteiten.
In de reservaatzone wisselen oude broekbossen die kolonies van de aalscholver en blauwe reiger herbergen, fraaie turfputten, veengraslanden, rietvelden, zeggevegetaties, drijftillen en een historische eendenkooi, elkaar af.
