Het hydronym 'Woluwe' zou zijn oorsprong vinden in de Germaanse woorden 'wele' of 'woele' wat 'bron' of 'fontein' betekent en 'euw' of 'eawe' wat 'water' betekent.

Ontspringend in het Zoniënwoud, afkomstig van de samenvloeiing van 3 waterlopen (de Zwanewijdebeek, de Vuilbeek en de Karregatbeek), stroomt de Woluwe over 21 km naar het noorden, in een brede vallei waar het zijn naam gaf aan drie plaatsen. In Brussel stroomt de Woluwe over 10 km meestal in open lucht met zijriviertjes die het van kwaliteitswater voorzien. Het traject is omzoomd door talrijke parken, natuurreservaten en vijvers, die samen een belangrijk herkenningspunt vormen voor trekvogels. Aan de uitgang van de Bosvoordevijver begint de Woluwe zijn ondergrondse reis voor een paar honderd meter. Na ongeveer twintig kilometer schenkt de rivier zijn water aan de Zenne, de belangrijkste waterweg van Brussel. Het afvalwater van de bewoners van deze dicht bevolkte vallei wordt opgevangen en sinds 2007 gezuiverd voordat het in de rivier wordt geloosd.
