Het werd gebouwd in een bocht van de Bocq, wiens water rondom het kasteel stroomt langs enkele watervallen. Het kasteel behoorde tot de adellijke familie van Beaufort (vernoemd naar een kasteel nabij Huy). Tussen 1266 en 1284 bouwde Pierre de Beaufort de hoofdtoren, die de kern van het kasteel vormt. In 1288 nam zijn zoon William (Guillaume), bijgenaamd de "Ardennen", deel aan de Slag bij Woeringen. Voor zijn moed in de strijd, waarin Hendrik VII van Luxemburg werd verslagen, werd hij beloond met het leen Spontin. Vanaf dat moment voegden de heren van kasteel Spontin voortdurend verschillende bijgebouwen toe tot de 16e eeuw, toen het zijn huidige vorm kreeg.
