In 1935 kwam Astrid, de koningin der Belgen op 29-jarige leeftijd hier om het leven bij een auto-ongeval. De koning verloor de controle over de wagen waarin het paar incognito, onder de naam Renard, een uitstapje maakte. De vorstin werd uit de auto geslingerd en tegen een boom gekatapulteerd. Door ernstig hoofdletsel was zij op slag dood. Samen met de vorstin overleed ook haar vierde ongeboren kind, terwijl haar andere kinderen thuis waren. De koningin werd opgebaard met een omzwachteld hoofd.
