Weimar is een zelfstandige stad in Thüringen in Duitsland, die bekend staat om haar cultureel erfgoed. De middelgrote stad ligt aan een bocht van de Ilm ten zuidoosten van de Ettersberg, de hoogste berg in het Thüringer Bekken met 478 meter. De stad is na Erfurt, Jena en Gera de vierde grootste van Thüringen en ligt ongeveer halverwege tussen Erfurt in het westen en Jena in het oosten.
Weimar is een middelcentrum dat deelfuncties van een bovenliggend centrum vervult en zich sinds 2004 een universiteitsstad noemt. Naast de Bauhaus-University herbergt de stad de Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt en de Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliotheek, evenals instanties zoals het Thüringer Oberverwaltungsgericht, het Thüringer Landesverwaltungsamt, de Thüringer Verfassungsgerichtshof en het Thüringische Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie.
