Het was in Mittenwald dat het Reichsbankgoud van de nazi's werd overgebracht naar Oberst Pfeiffer van de Gebirgsjäger (Edelweiss-regiment). Het goud was onderweg van Berlijn naar Garmisch-Partenkirchen, maar de geallieerden kwamen te dichtbij Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Dus brachten ze het naar Mittenwald.
Sommige soldaten van Pfeiffer verstopten het goud in de buurt van Mittenwald.
