Duisburg is een zelfstandige grote stad, die aan de monding van de Ruhr in de Rijn ligt. De stad maakt deel uit van de metropoolregio Rijn-Ruhr met in totaal ongeveer tien miljoen inwoners en behoort zowel tot de regio Nederrijn als tot het Ruhrgebied. Het ligt in de bestuurlijke regio Düsseldorf en is met ongeveer een halve miljoen inwoners na Keulen, Düsseldorf, Dortmund en Essen de vijfde grootste stad van de deelstaat Noordrijn-Westfalen. Volgens gegevens van de stad schommelde het aantal inwoners de laatste jaren tussen 498.000 en 503.000 inwoners. Het bovenliggende centrum staat op de 15e plaats op de lijst van grote steden in Duitsland. Duisburg was in 2010 onderdeel van het stedelijke gebied Ruhrgebied, Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa.
