In deze slag weerstond een Frans leger onder Victor-François de Broglie de aanvallen van een geallieerd leger, bestaande uit Hannoveriaanse, Hessische, Brunswijkse en Pruisische troepen onder Prins Ferdinand van Brunswijk-Lüneburg.
Bij de opening van het campagne seizoen van 1759 nam Prins Ferdinand een voorsprong door al eind maart met zijn leger uit de winterverblijven te vertrekken. Zijn doel was Frankfurt, een Franse basis.
