Nurmes is een gemeente en stad in de Finse provincie Oost-Finland en in de Finse regio Noord-Karelië. De gemeente heeft een landoppervlakte van 1605 km² . De bevolking van Nurmes neemt gestaag af, de gemeente telde 8555 inwoners in 2010, tegenover een kleine 15.000 inwoners in 1960.De grootste toeristische trekpleister is het in het begin van de 20ste eeuw gebouwde Bombahuis dat opgetrokken werd in de traditionele Karelische stijl.
