In Dieppe was in de 16e eeuw de meest geavanceerde Franse school voor cartografie gevestigd. Het was de belangrijkste haven van het koninkrijk in de 17e eeuw. Tijdens de latere negentiende eeuw werd Dieppe populair bij Engelse kunstenaars als strandresort. Prominente literaire figuren zoals Arthur Symons hielden hier graag op de hoogte van de nieuwste rages van het avant-garde Frankrijk. Louis de Broglie, een Nobelprijswinnend natuurkundige, werd geboren in Dieppe.
